I’m guessing it was 1994 when I noticed OHenry’s Coffee while downtown Homewood. I was a frequent customer in Laser’s Edge and was often walking through the area. I wandered into OHenry’s one time and was taken with it’s laid back atmosphere and great coffee. It seemed a perfect spot to hang out with friends which is what I began to do.
A group of my girlfriends starting gathering there one night a week for coffee and a time to catch up on our lives. It was often the thing I looked forward to each week. We sat inside or out, laughed a lot, and enjoyed some great coffee and treats. We’ve shut the place down more times than I can even remember! Sometimes we’d even linger out on the sidewalk well past 10pm.
The group has changed a good bit in the 20 plus years we’ve been gathering. Some have moved away and some have returned. We’ve had weddings, children and many different jobs. Husbands and boyfriends have showed up and tried to “crash” in on our fun! We’ve been “shushed” a few times when we got loud by studying students. One friend always comments, “Well this isn’t a library it’s a coffee shop!” Ha!
It’s truly been a big chunk of most of our lives. Even when I lived in Connecticut for several years, it was always a given that when visiting Birmingham we’d meet at OHenry’s Coffee for a great way to catch up. I’ve been back 12 years now and even though lately we’re not meeting as frequently I still always have a special place in my heart for OHenry’s! And I think all the girls in the group would agree!
So thank you and congratulations on 25 years!
