Tanzania Peaberry Coffee
This rare coffee has it all in its medium-dark roast profile – tasting notes of tangerine, cranberry, and chocolate with a spectacular aroma of sweet pipe tobacco.
A rare coffee grown in the southern highlands of Tanzania, on the other side of the country from Mount Kilimanjaro.
Peaberries, a type of coffee bean that grows when only one half of the coffee flower is pollinated, produces a cup of coffee that tastes distinctly different than a typically-grown coffee bean from the same plant. Because of this, coffee mills sort all of the peaberries together and sell them as a unique new coffee product.
Over 90% of Tanzania’s coffee crops are grown on small, family plots. Thanks in large part to the country’s economic and political independence gained in the 1960s, coffee has been an important export commodity that promotes stability for not just the country at large, but for a large swath of the Tanzanian population to this day. In fact, even the farmers of family plots are able to sell their coffee on the open market to buyers all over the world, ensuring families receive and retain a fair price for their product.
It is not often that we are able to truly realize a direct connection between our choices as consumers and the effects they have on a farmer’s life on the other side of the world, but we are proud to know that this coffee enables us to do exactly that.
We roast these beans to a medium-dark to accentuate their unique spicy tangerine notes and balance the coffee’s naturally bright acidity.
